MATCH REPORTS 1970-71

Saturday 27th February 1971
NORTHWOOD PLAYER SENT OFF
NORTHWOOD 2  HENDON RESERVES 3

Northwood’s chances of Middlesex League honours faded on Saturday when they fell at home to Hendon in a tough, sometimes rough, encounter. And Northwood’s tale of woe was complete when Millward got his marching orders in the second half.

The opening exchanges were fairly even, but Northwood should have taken the lead when Pearce hit a post. Still, with Woods in fine form, a goal seemed inevitable, and when Byrne crossed to the far post Millward was on hand to net his club a deserved lead.

With a goal under their belts Northwood seemed to slow down, a fatal mistake against a side of Hendon’s class, and the visitors took full advantage to get back into the match with an equaliser.

From the restart the home team stormed upfield in a determined effort to regain their lead, and it was no surprise when Byrne put Horsford through to hammer in Northwood’s second.

Hendon came back straight away, and with the Northwood defence claiming offside, their tricky winger went through to net the levelling goal.

With 20 minutes left Millward was sent off for a bad foul, and for the remainder of the game Northwood were up against it with ten men. And inevitably, Hendon grabbed the late winner to take both points.

Northwood: R. Byrne, Harding, Madigan, Dibbens, Bailey, Gould, Harvey, Pearce, P. Byrne, Millward, Horsford.
